TIL the 50/30/20 budget rule actually works for my grocery spending

My problem was always blowing my food budget in Portland, where prices are high. I tried the 50/30/20 rule, putting $400 a month for groceries in the 'needs' category and sticking to it. It forced me to plan meals instead of just grabbing takeout. Has anyone else found a specific rule like this that finally clicked for them?

Read a blog post that said it helps to avoid impulse buys. You wait a day and the urge usually passes. Makes a huge difference over time.
