The week I tracked every single $1 and found $64 hiding in plain sight
Last month I finally got fed up with my budget being off by $20 or $30 every week, so I wrote down every purchase for 7 days straight. Turned out I was spending $4.25 on vending machine snacks at my office in Austin, Texas, almost every afternoon, plus another $3.50 on parking app fees I never noticed. Cutting those two things alone gave me $64 back in one week, which paid for my gas for the next two weeks. Has anyone else found small repeated charges that add up way more than the occasional big splurge?
The part about the parking app fees getting you is what really stands out to me. Everybody talks about the coffee and the snacks, but those apps are sneaky because you set them up once and then they just live on your phone. I had one that charged me a "convenience fee" of $1.75 every single time I parked downtown, and I was doing that like 10 times a week. That's $17.50 right there that never showed up as a real purchase in my head, it just blended into the parking cost. The snack stuff you can at least see yourself buying, but the app fees are invisible until you go line by line.
