Shoutout to the envelope system for groceries I thought was ridiculous

I was sure cash in envelopes was just old school nonsense until I overspent by $80 in one week just because I swipe a card and don't think. After trying it for two months I saved $45 on food alone but the hassle of carrying cash everywhere makes me wonder if it's worth it for everyone or just me. Anyone else try something cheap that shocked you but also annoyed you?

$45 a month is a LOT of money for most people, that's like a car payment or a few nice dinners out. I get that carrying cash is annoying but I think the pain point is what makes it WORK. When I have to physically hand over bills for ground beef and onions I feel it in my gut. That little sting of reality is what stops me from grabbing the organic salsa or the fancy cheese. You don't get that same feeling with a card swipe. The hassle is the whole point, it's supposed to be a little inconvenient so you actually PAY ATTENTION.

Haha yeah, my wallet feels it too, especially when I forget the exact change and look like a fool fumbling around.
