Pro tip: I finally tried the envelope system after years of calling it a gimmick
I used to think cash stuffing was some Dave Ramsey cult thing for people who can't handle a debit card. Then my checking account hit $11 two days before payday in April and I got tired of the same mess. I pulled $200 out at the credit union on a Monday and split it into four envelopes: groceries, gas, fun, and dumb stuff. The dumb stuff envelope is the one that got me. It was empty by Thursday and I just... didn't buy anything else that week. Something about handing over actual bills hurts way more than tapping a card at Target. My grocery spending dropped from around $480 to $310 that first month, and I wasn't even trying that hard. I'm not saying it works for everyone, but I was wrong about it being a gimmick. What finally broke your card habit, or am I the only one who had to go backwards to cash to get it right?
