My coworker Dave convinced me to stop obsessing over every penny
Dave showed me his budget spreadsheet last week. He said he only tracks three categories: housing, food, and fun. Everything else is just noise to him. I was tracking like 20 categories and driving myself crazy. He told me I was spending more time on the budget than actually saving money. It made me think about what really matters.

My buddy Mark tried that and ended up spending his rent money on concert tickets.

Yeah the "spending rent money" part hits close to home. I've learned the hard way that if I don't separate my money into different envelopes or accounts the second I get paid, I'll convince myself I can afford things I definitely can't. What works now is I have a separate checking account just for bills that I don't even look at except to pay stuff, and another one for fun money that's way smaller. That way if I blow the fun money on concert tickets or whatever, my rent is already safe and I'm not borrowing from next month.
