Hot take: watching a friend in Chicago split a restaurant bill with an app changed my whole view on group dinners.

We used to just guess and throw cash down, always off by a few bucks. Now we use Splitwise, and I've saved about $200 this year from not overpaying.

My old crew had a guy who'd always order the extra appetizer and a fancy cocktail, then want to split the total evenly. It built up some real quiet resentment over time. Switching to an app was like hitting a reset button on those dinners, because the math isn't up for debate anymore. Now we all just pay for what we actually got, and nobody feels like they're getting taken for a ride. It sounds small, but it really does change the whole vibe of the night for the better.

Totally get that. It goes beyond just saving money, it saves the friendship. I had a buddy who would always "forget" his wallet, and we'd all cover him. With the app, he pays his share right then or it's on record. It removes the awkward "you owe me" talks later. The bill gets split right, and we can just focus on the food and the company.

Switched my group to this exact system after a similar issue, @alexj99. I had one friend who would ALWAYS order the most expensive thing and then claim we agreed to split it even. Using an app where everyone just pays for their own stuff killed that tension real quick. Now we all just look at our own items on the screen and tap pay, no debates at all. It really does make the whole dinner feel lighter when nobody is keeping score in their head.
