Got roasted on my grocery budget by a cashier in Austin
I was at HEB last week buying my usual $350 of stuff and the cashier goes 'Wow, you could cut this in half if you stopped buying brand name snacks.' I got defensive at first but then I looked at my receipt and saw $45 worth of chips and granola bars. So I switched to store brand for two weeks and saved $60. Has anyone else had a stranger call them out and it actually helped?

Are store brand snacks just a gateway to admitting I'm a cheap person now?

Oh man, "cut this in half if you stopped buying brand name snacks" - that cashier basically called me out on my whole LIFE right there in the checkout line. I had a similar moment at Target where some random mom pointed at my cart full of Doritos and laughed, saying I was "funding the chip industry's yacht." Hurt my pride for a second but then I did the math and realized I was spending like $50 a month JUST on crunchy things. Store brand tortilla chips taste EXACTLY the same once you drown them in salsa anyway. Now I walk past the name brand aisle like I'm too good for it, which is funny because I'm DEFINITELY not too good for anything.
