Found out my annual 'quick stop' coffee habit cost $580
Punched my debit card history into a spreadsheet last night and nearly choked. That's 4 months of my car insurance just gone on lattes I barely remember drinking.

Bought a nice travel mug for $25 and started making my own coffee. One bag of beans at $12 lasts me about two weeks. That's like $25 a month total instead of over $100. I also set up a recurring monthly transfer of what I used to spend on coffee into a separate savings account. Seeing that number grow is way more satisfying than any latte ever was. Did the same thing with buying lunch at work, saved even more.

Haha I get that it works for some people but honestly I feel like the whole coffee savings thing gets overblown. If you're spending $100 a month on coffee you're either going to some ridiculously overpriced place or buying like 3 lattes a day. Most people I know spend maybe $30-40 a month and that includes the occasional treat.

@hugog43 got the right idea with that savings transfer. My buddy Dan found himself in the same boat as OP last year. He was grabbing a drive-thru latte every morning for like 6 months straight and had no clue what it added up to. When he finally checked his bank statements, he was spending close to $50 a month on coffee alone. He felt so dumb about it that he started making coffee at home and put the extra cash toward his car payment instead. We still joke about his "fancy coffee days" whenever we see a coffee shop sign on the road. Did you try a morning routine change or did you just cut cold turkey?
