Broken washing machine forced me to actually check my spending
My washer died last Tuesday mid-cycle and left a puddle in the laundry room. I had to pull $450 from my emergency fund to get a used one off Facebook Marketplace. While waiting for the new one, I sat down and realized I was spending $80 a month on takeout coffee alone. Has anyone else had a random breakdown mess with their budget planning?

Hit the nail on the head. I've noticed this happens to SO many people. We get stuck in these little routines like the coffee runs or ordering delivery, and it takes something breaking down to actually SHOW us how much we're bleeding money. It's like we're all just coasting along with these habits that are totally normal until a cold hard look at your bank account makes you realize you've been paying for convenience without thinking about it. Your dead washer is basically a wake up call that's way bigger than just a one time repair bill.

My neighbor Carol had something similar happen a few years back with her fridge. It stopped working in the middle of July and she had to throw out a whole week's worth of groceries. That really got her thinking about how much she spent on takeout and daily Starbucks runs, because she suddenly had to cover a big repair bill. She told me she started adding up what she spent on coffee and fast food over a month, and it was over $300. That was a real eye opener for her. She ended up buying a cheap drip coffee maker and a reusable water bottle, and within six months she had saved enough to buy a new fridge outright. Sometimes it takes a little jolt like a broken appliance to make you see the small things that add up.
