Why does nobody talk about how fast hostel prices climb in the winter?

I hit a wall last week when I realized my usual $30/night hostel in Bangkok jumped to $65 in December. Same bunk bed, same thin mattress, but suddenly it's double because of high season. That's a whole extra day I could have stayed somewhere else. Anyone else get burned by seasonal pricing after assuming it'd stay cheap?

Oh wow, I literally just read a blog about this exact thing. Someone was saying hostels in places like Thailand and Vietnam double their prices during peak season because they know people will pay it. It's not even just about the weather, it's about demand from tourists who don't know any better. I had the same surprise in Chiang Mai last year, paid $50 for a dorm bed that was $20 in September. Kinda makes you second-guess the whole "budget travel" reputation.
