TIL using a hostel kitchen saved me $400 in one week

I was traveling through Austin last month and staying in a cheap hostel. Instead of eating out every meal, I started buying groceries and cooking in their shared kitchen. I tracked my spending for a week and realized I spent $45 on food total. My buddy eating out every day dropped $120 on just dinners. That $75 difference over a week blew my mind, especially when I was making stuff like tacos and pasta that tasted fine. Anyone else had good luck cooking in hostel kitchens to save cash?

It's funny how that small habit of tracking spending and cooking at the hostel spills over into regular life. I started doing the same thing at home just prepping a few meals a week and it cut my monthly restaurant bills by almost half. Most people underestimate how much those little daily decisions add up, especially when you're not paying attention to where the money is actually going.

Wait, are you telling me you actually tracked your spending down to the dollar? That is some serious dedication, but man, the payoff is real. I did the same thing in New Orleans and it saved my whole trip because I had way more cash for live music and stuff. The best part was meeting other travelers while we all cooked, sharing tips on where to go for cheap drinks. Hostel kitchens are honestly a secret weapon for anyone trying to stretch their vacation money further.

Wait, did you catch that NPR piece last month about how hostel kitchens actually save travelers like 30% on food costs? It's wild how much you can stretch a budget just by making your own pasta or whatever. I've never been one for tracking every cent, but your New Orleans story makes a pretty good case for it.
