The "accidental" bus driver trick that got me a free 3 day pass

I was in Lisbon trying to figure out the metro system and kept messing up the ticket machine because everything was in Portuguese. This guy behind me got frustrated and just tapped his card on the reader for me, and then showed me that the day pass resets at 4am not midnight. I spent like 30 bucks less on transit that whole trip and felt like a genius. Has anyone else had a local just casually save them a ton of cash with a random trick?
