Reading the printed forum archives at the library vs. scrolling on my phone now
Back in 2011 I used to go to the downtown branch and print out 30 pages of forum threads about hostels in Southeast Asia. I'd sit there with a highlighter and a notebook and circle the names of guesthouses that had hot water for sure. Cost me about 60 cents per visit in printing fees. Now I just pull up the same kind of info on my phone while standing in line for a bus ticket. It's faster but I actually remember more of those printed details, like the exact alley to turn down in Chiang Mai for the $3 noodle place. The old way forced me to slow down and plan, the new way lets me wing it every time. Is anyone else finding the convenience makes you less prepared on the ground, or is that just me losing my edge with age?
