PSA: My shared hostel kitchen fund got cleaned out by a midnight snacker

We all put in cash to buy food for the week. One person raided the stash on the first night and we were left with nothing. How do you prevent this kind of thing without seeming rude?

Ugh the midnight snacker. Had that happen in Barcelona. Our group fund was for pasta and sauce. Woke up to empty boxes and a single dirty bowl in the sink. Person never fessed up. We started just buying our own small stuff after that. Locked cabinet for shared things if the hostel has one.

Okay but like, was it really worth getting that upset over? It's just some pasta, and hostels are all about sharing space anyway. Sometimes people get hungry late at night and don't think straight, you know? I get it's annoying, but going full lockbox mode seems a bit much for a few missed meals. In the big picture, it's not the end of the world.
