Pro tip: check the expiration on your travel insurance before a trip
I bought a policy for my trip to Portland last fall, but when my bag got lost at the airport, I found out the coverage had expired two days before I left. The agent at the claims desk basically said tough luck, and I ate the $150 replacement cost for clothes and toiletries. Has anyone else gotten burned by an insurance fine print detail like that?

Actually I kind of see it the other way. You're saying the insurance company messed up, but most travel policies have a clear start and end date printed right on the declaration page. If you didn't double check that before you left, that's on you. I've never had an issue because I always read the fine print when I buy the policy and set a reminder in my phone for when coverage starts and stops. Lost my luggage in Chicago once and got reimbursed because I knew exactly what I was covered for. Insurance companies aren't your friends, they're businesses that follow the contract you agreed to.

Yeah but reading fine print doesn't excuse shady timing on cancellations.
