My sister said she never pays for a hotel in New York City anymore

We were catching up last weekend and she told me she only uses house sitting websites now, saying she stayed in a nice Brooklyn apartment for free last month just by feeding a cat. I always thought those sites were sketchy, but she made it sound easy and safe. Has anyone here actually tried house sitting to cut travel costs, and what was your first time like?

So you're telling me I could have traveled for free if I just liked cats more?

It's more about being willing to watch someone's cat for a week or two, not just liking them. You get free housing in exchange for taking care of the pets. The liking cats part is pretty important though, because you're feeding them and cleaning their litter box.

What about the time commitment though? I tried it once and felt stuck because you can't just leave for a full day of sightseeing if the dog needs medication every few hours. It's not free, you're trading your time and flexibility for a place to sleep.
