Just realized booking hostels through their own site is cheaper
For years I used Hostelworld and figured the fees were just part of the deal. Last month I booked directly with a place in Portland and saved $8 on a $35 night, plus got a free breakfast. Has anyone else noticed how much the third party sites tack on?

Does it count as a win if I didn't even know there was a difference until I accidentally called a hostel that sounded fancy and it turned out to be the same one I saw online? I felt like a real genius for saving that $7, but honestly I just forgot to look at the booking site first. Now I always check the hostel's own site, even if it means typing the name into Google like a caveman.

and that $8 could buy a real meal too. Hostelworld's booking fee is basically a scam at this point, 10-15% on top of everything. I called a place in San Diego direct after seeing them on there and got a dorm for $28 instead of $34. They just count on people being too lazy to look up the actual hostel number.
