Just got burned by a cheap hostel in Barcelona

I booked a 12 euro a night hostel in Barcelona off Hostelworld and the place had no AC, no lockers, and the guy running it slept in the lobby. The mattress was basically a yoga mat with a sheet on it and I woke up with bites on my arms. Anyone got tips for spotting the fake cheap listings that look good online but are actually rough?

Oh the biting bugs thing is AWFUL. My friend booked a "boutique" hostel in Prague that was basically a squat and she ended up sleeping in the train station for her second night there. She said the pictures were taken from like 30 feet away so you couldn't see the peeling walls and broken AC units.
