I was dead wrong about hostels until I stayed at one in Portland last month

For years I thought hostels were just dirty party dorms for college kids. Then I had a 3 day layover and spent $45 a night at a place in the Pearl District. Private room, clean kitchen, and the front desk guy gave me a list of free walking tours that saved me like $60. Anyone else have a surprise turnaround on something you used to hate?
