I used to book hostels through third party sites but now I go direct and save way more

Honestly I used to always use Hostelworld because I thought I was getting deals. But after I booked a place in Barcelona last summer and got hit with a hidden service fee that added $12 to my total I started checking the hostel's own website. Now I book direct almost every time and I've saved between $8 and $20 per stay plus they often throw in free breakfast or late checkout. Has anyone else noticed the prices being lower on the actual hostel site?

Ugh that's the BEST perk, @the_morgan. So jealous right now!

Free breakfast is fine and all, but I wouldn't exactly call it a life changing perk. I've booked direct a few times and the "free" breakfast was just a sad continental spread with stale pastries and watery orange juice. Most hotels these days throw in breakfast anyway if you just ask nicely at the front desk, so it's hardly something to get worked up over. If we're talking about real perks like free upgrades or late checkout, then I'd understand the excitement a bit more. But a piece of toast and a cup of coffee? That's not worth rearranging your whole booking strategy over, in my opinion.
