I hit 12 countries on $50 a day and it actually ruined the trip

Everyone brags about hitting that number, but my $50 daily cap in Portugal meant I skipped every castle entrance and ate grocery store bread instead of pastel de nata. The day I finally splurged on an $8 museum ticket was the only day I remember clearly. Has anyone else found that strict budget milestones make travel feel more like a chore than an adventure?
