I finally skipped the hostel and booked a private room in Lisbon
Everyone says hostels are the only way to save money, but I paid 45 euros a night for my own quiet space near the Alfama district. It meant I skipped a few fancy dinners, but I actually slept well and felt safe coming back late. Has anyone else found that a private room was worth the extra cost over a dorm?

Used to be a die-hard hostel person for the budget. Then I spent a week in Barcelona getting woken up at 4am by someone's plastic bag every night. A private room for 50 euros near the beach changed the whole trip. Sleep is a non-negotiable cost now.

I did a cheap hostel in Berlin once and the guy above me had a squeaky bunk that sounded like a dying mouse all night. Found a small guesthouse with private rooms for 45 euros a night after that. The extra 20 bucks meant I could actually enjoy the city instead of being a zombie.
