I finally hit 40 countries on a shoestring budget, but the math felt off

Last month I crossed country number 40 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and after tallying my total spend of $14,800 over six years of trips, I realized I spent more on last-minute flights between nearby cities than on lodging, so has anyone else found that border hopping ruins their per-day average more than anything else?
