Hostel bunk vs overnight bus seat - one was way worse than I thought

Last summer I tried the overnight bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai to save $15 over a hostel bed. Figured I'd sleep fine on a reclining seat. Big mistake - the AC froze me solid, the driver hit 3 potholes every mile, and some guy snored like a chainsaw 2 rows back. The next morning I paid double for a private room just to crash for 4 hours. Has anyone else tried this and regretted it?

Oh man, that sounds rough. I actually did the opposite and it worked out okay for me. I took an overnight bus from Ho Chi Minh to Da Nang and brought a hoodie, a blanket scarf thing, and those foam earplugs. The AC still got me but I wrapped up like a burrito and actually got a few hours in. Driver wasn't as bad with the potholes though, maybe I got lucky. Still wouldn't do it again for just $15 savings though, not worth feeling dead the next day.

Totally feel you on this, the overnight bus is such a gamble. Sounds like you still made the most of it with the burrito strategy, which is honestly the only way to survive that AC. Glad it worked out better for you though, sometimes you just get lucky with a smoother ride and it almost feels worth it.
