Heard a couple at the airport talking about their Lisbon trip... and it made me check my own bookings
They were saying how their 'cheap' flight to Portugal got them, because the airline charged 75 euros each to check a carry-on bag at the gate... they hadn't read the fine print. I went and checked my Ryanair booking for next month and sure enough, my 'basic' fare only includes a small bag under the seat. Has anyone else been caught by this and found a good way to pack for a week in just a personal item?

My last trip with just a personal item looked like I was running from the law, not going on vacation. I've become a master of the single outfit worn multiple days and stuffing socks into shoes. Rolling clothes is the only way it works, and a soft bag you can really cram under the seat is key. It's a puzzle I hate solving every single time.

My cousin did that same Ryanair thing last summer and ended up wearing the same hoodie for 5 days straight. I get the frustration but honestly I think the challenge is part of the fun. For a week I use a 20 liter backpack and layer up with a light jacket that has big pockets for my phone and charger. I wash socks and underwear in the sink with hotel soap and they dry by morning. The trick is picking clothes that mix and match, like three shirts and two pairs of pants that all go together. I save the space for a book and a decent coffee mug, which is non-negotiable for me.
