Had to pick between a hostel in Rome or a cheap hotel outside the city

My friend and I were looking at a 5 night stay, and the hostel in the center was 25 euros a night but shared a room with 8 people, while the hotel was 40 euros a night and private but a 45 minute train ride away. We went with the hotel for the quiet sleep and just bought a 3 day transit pass for 18 euros, which worked out great. Has anyone else found it's better to stay a bit farther out to save money on the room itself?

Your "quiet sleep" point changed my mind, I used to always pick the cheapest bed.

A good mattress is a long-term health investment (cheap ones can mess up your back). It's worth saving up for.

Honestly, I'd take the hostel for the time saved and city vibe. A good sleep matters, like emma_hayes80 said, but I can sleep anywhere when I'm tired.
