Had to choose between a hostel in Lisbon and a private room on the outskirts

I went with the hostel for $25 a night and honestly the shared bathroom situation wasn't bad at all. Has anyone else found that hostels are way better than you expect once you're actually there?

Maybe it's just me but you basically paid for a constant meet and greet every time you need to brush your teeth. Nothing like a hostel to remind you how much you take a private toilet for granted. Still beats paying fifty bucks just to sleep somewhere though.

@faith_price7 hit it right with the "constant meet and greet" thing. I stayed in a hostel in Barcelona and forgot my earplugs one night, ended up chatting with a guy from Finland at 2am while waiting for the shower. Not ideal for sleep but I got some solid travel tips out of it. Your mileage may vary but those unexpected moments have actually made some of my trips better in the long run.
