Found out the average hostel in Europe charges 35 euros a night now, not the 15 euros I remember from 10 years ago

I was planning a trip to Portugal for next spring and checked Hostelworld out of curiosity, and it blew my mind how much the prices jumped since I backpacked in 2014 has anyone else noticed this or am I just getting old?

Yeah I remember paying like 12 bucks for a dorm in Budapest back in 2012. Now my buddy went last year and said the same hostel was 40. Inflation hit hostels hard I guess.

Bro it's not JUST inflation though. Everyone blames inflation for everything these days. The REAL shift nobody talks about is how hostels went from being cheap crash pads to "boutique social experiences" with private rooms and rooftop bars. They literally rebranded themselves as budget hotels and dropped the dorm vibe. I stayed at a place in Prague that used to be a chill 10 euro spot, now they call it a "hostel" but have a coworking space and craft beer taproom. The whole model changed because they figured out they could charge boutique prices if they made hostels look Instagrammable. So yeah inflation is PART of it, but the bigger thing is hostels just aren't aiming for budget travelers like they used to.

Right? Now you gotta be an influencer to afford a bunk bed. Guess my broke backpacker days are over cause I'm not photogenic enough for a hostel anymore.
