Took me 6 months to figure out I was wasting money on bagged lettuce

I kept buying those $4 bags of pre-washed salad mix every week. Then last Tuesday I noticed half the bag was wilted before I even opened it. My roommate pointed out that a head of romaine costs $1.50 and lasts twice as long. I finally timed myself washing and chopping a head of lettuce - it took 3 minutes. Has anyone else realized they were paying triple just to skip a simple step?

I heard somewhere that bagged lettuce is actually rinsed in chlorine to keep it fresh, which kinda grossed me out honestly. Once I started buying whole heads and washing them myself, I noticed they stay good for way longer in the fridge. It's like common sense once you stop and think about it.

Chlorine wash? Wait, that can't be right. I mean I knew they did something to keep it from turning brown in the bag but that's actually wild. So we're basically eating salad that's been dipped in pool water? No thanks. I've been buying whole heads of romaine and iceberg for awhile now too, and yeah, they seriously last like a week or more in the crisper drawer if you wrap them in a damp paper towel. Meanwhile that bagged stuff turns into slime after like two days in the fridge, it's ridiculous.

Totally agree. Switched to whole heads myself and never looked back.
