Shoutout to the guy at the food bank who said my rice and beans were 'sad' and showed me how to fix it
I've been cooking rice and beans almost daily for about 8 months now since money got tight, and I thought I had it figured out. A volunteer at the food bank in Fresno looked at my bag of plain white rice and canned beans and said, 'that's sad, dude, you're missing the whole point.' He told me to toast the rice in oil first and add a bouillon cube plus a can of diced tomatoes, which costs maybe 75 cents extra per batch. I tried it that night and it honestly tasted like a completely different meal, way more filling too. I've made it 6 times since and my grocery bill for dinners dropped from around $40 a week to $26. Now I'm wondering what other 'boring' staples I'm cooking wrong, has anyone else gotten a tip like this that changed a cheap meal for them?
