Rant: That $40 bag of organic chickpeas that sat in my pantry for 8 months

I bought a huge 5 pound bag of organic chickpeas from a bulk store in Portland last January, thinking I'd save money by making hummus from scratch. Turns out they were way too old and took forever to cook, and I ended up tossing half the bag after a bad batch. Has anyone else fallen for the bulk savings trap only to waste money on food that went stale?

Did you try soaking them overnight first? I did the same thing with a big bag of dried beans from Costco once, and they were so old they never got soft no matter how long I boiled them. I ended up making a weird crunchy bean salad that nobody ate, and the dog wouldn't even touch it. Now I only buy small bags from the grocery store that have a date on them.

Little tip @laura_knight54 - if they're that old, adding a pinch of baking soda to the soak water actually helps break down the skins and they'll cook up softer. Learned that the hard way after tossing a similar bag of chickpeas that turned into little rocks.
