Rant: Everyone says beans and rice is the cheapest meal but my math says eggs win
I tracked every grocery receipt for 8 weeks at my store in Akron and a dozen eggs at $2.19 beat a $1.29 bag of dried beans once you count the onion, spices, and 90 minutes of gas on the stove, so what's the actual cheapest protein you've found where the numbers held up?
Your egg math holds up but you're missing the part that actually flips it back. Dried beans store for like two years in a jar, eggs go bad in three or four weeks unless you're eating a dozen a day. So the real cost of eggs isn't the sticker, it's the waste when life happens and you skip cooking for a week. Same thing with spices, you buy cumin once and it lasts a year, so counting the whole jar against one pot of beans makes the beans look way worse than they are. The honest number is cost per gram of protein eaten, not bought, and that's where beans usually catch back up. Tofu is the dark horse here too, $1.79 a block at my Aldi and it soaks up whatever you cook it in.
