I used to think dried beans were a waste of time until a $15 bag got me through a tough week in February.

My roommate showed me how to soak them overnight and use the slow cooker, which convinced me they're way cheaper and better tasting than canned, so has anyone got good spice combos for pinto beans?

Ever tried smoked paprika and a little cumin? That's my go-to for pintos.

Smoked paprika is a good start, but cumin can really take over if you're not careful. For pintos, oliviac22, I find a tiny pinch is plenty, or it just tastes like chili powder. The real trick is letting them cook low and slow with some onion and a bit of pork fat. That builds a base flavor the spices just sit on top of. Too much cumin too early makes the whole pot taste one-note.
