Finally saw the difference after switching to dried beans for a month straight
I used to laugh at people who said canned beans weren't worth it, but my grocery bill was hitting $60 a week just for me. Last month I bought a 2-pound bag of pinto beans for $2.50 at the Mexican market on Clement Street. Soaked them overnight, boiled them for an hour, and now I've got enough for 8 meals that taste way better than the mushy canned ones. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize you've been throwing money down the drain for convenience?

Have you noticed how much salt they pack into canned beans too? I had to rinse mine three times and they still tasted like a brine bath, which was probably messing with my blood pressure more than I realized. After switching to dried beans, I started adding a bay leaf and some garlic to the pot instead, and now that's the flavor I actually want without all that extra junk.

@lily89 good call on the bay leaf and garlic, makes a huge difference. Actually, that brine taste is from the processing liquid, not extra salt, but rinsing does help a ton. Soaked beans just have a better texture overall, no contest.
