Bought a whole chicken instead of breasts last week and it paid off big

I was at the grocery store in Tulsa last Tuesday and saw whole chickens were $1.29 a pound while boneless breasts were $3.49. Figured I'd give it a try. Got home, broke it down myself, and ended up with 4 meals worth of meat plus a carcass for stock. Has anyone else messed around with breaking down whole birds to save money?

Did you try roasting the bones for extra flavor before making stock? I've been doing that lately and it really makes a difference in soups and stews.

Broke down a chicken for the first time and felt like a SURGEON with dull kitchen shears and a lot of swearing. Totally worth it though when I realized I had enough meat for three dinners AND some leftover scraps for soup. My neighbor thought I was crazy until I handed her a container of homemade stock that smelled like actual chicken instead of salt water.
