Tried foamboard armor for my first build at Anime Boston and it warped by day two
I made a full set of shoulder and chest pieces out of foamboard and plasti dip last month for Anime Boston. I figured it would be light and cheap since I only spent around $30 on materials at the local craft store. By the second day the chest piece had curled in on itself from my body heat and sweat, which I did not expect at all. Does anyone here seal their foam edges before painting, or do you just deal with it?
Wait, the chest piece curled from your body heat and sweat? That blows my mind. I have worn cheap plastic armor before and yeah it gets gross inside but it does not fold up on itself. Foamboard has that paper skin on both sides and once sweat soaks into the raw edges it just gives up. A friend of mine made a helmet that did the same thing at a con in July. You can seal the edges with a few coats of mod podge or wood glue first, then plasti dip over that. The paper is the weak spot, not the foam.
