That dollar store foam core trick actually saved my armor build
I was about to scrap my whole Mandalorian chest plate because EVA foam was getting too expensive at $8 a sheet near me in Tulsa. Then I tried using a hot knife on 99 cent foam core from the craft aisle, peeling the paper off both sides. It curved way better than I expected and painted up nice after three coats of primer... has anyone else tried this on curved armor pieces?

Oh man, yeah I did the exact same thing on my bracers and it worked way better than I thought. That paper peel is the real trick, makes it flex like actual plastic.

Was the paper peel dry when you applied it or still a little damp?
