Spent $95 on EVA foam that crumbled, now I'm wondering if cheap foam is ever worth it

Bought three sheets of off brand 5mm EVA foam for a Mandalorian build because it was half the price of the good stuff. Cut and heat shaped my chest plate, glued it with contact cement, and the next morning every seam had split open. The foam was too dense and kept springing back, so nothing held its shape after two days. Wound up tossing the whole thing and dropping another $60 on the brand I should have bought first. So is there a cheap foam that actually works, or do we all just need to eat the cost up front?
