So I tried making chainmail from soda can tabs for a knight costume

Honestly, I thought it would look super cheap and feel awful, but after linking about 300 of them with jump rings, it actually moves and shines like the real deal. My friend saw it and said 'Wait, you made that from trash?' and I felt like a crafting genius. Has anyone else pulled off a decent armor piece from stuff you'd normally recycle?

My cousin made a whole Roman lorica segmentata out of old license plates once, looked wild but weighed a ton.

Ha, that's actually pretty clever but also kind of hilarious. I gotta say though, license plates are aluminum these days, not steel like the originals. So it probably wasn't as heavy as the real thing would have been. Roman segmentata was made from iron plates, which is way denser and heavier. Still, even with aluminum that thing had to be a beast to move around in for more than a few minutes. Props to your cousin for the creativity though, that takes some serious dedication.
