PSA: I found out you can make a decent lightsaber hilt from a sink drain pipe.

Saw a post on a hardware forum where someone used a 1.5 inch PVC pipe and a couple of end caps, total cost under $5. Has anyone else tried building props from plumbing supplies?

Forget the weight debate, has anyone considered how the material changes the sound? A metal hilt like lindagreen's will make a totally different clang if you tap it compared to a hollow plastic pipe. That sound sells the fantasy just as much as the look in your hand.

Have you actually held one of those PVC builds? They feel super cheap and light, nothing like a real prop. I used some old metal conduit and a couple of plumbing flanges for mine, the weight just feels right. You can't beat real metal for something you're gonna swing around.

That weight thing @lindagreen talks about is a real point, but there's a safety angle too. Swinging a heavy metal prop at a con when you're tired and crowded is a hazard. A light PVC build is way less likely to accidentally clock someone in the head. It's about knowing your event space.
