My cheap foam board armor experiment went totally wrong
I tried to make some sci-fi shoulder pads last weekend with that dollar store foam board. I spent about $8 on three sheets and a whole afternoon cutting and shaping. The second I tried to heat form it with a hair dryer, the whole thing warped and melted into a sticky mess. It was a complete waste of time and money. Has anyone found a GOOD cheap material for armor that actually holds its shape? I need to start over.

It's that classic dollar store trap. You go in for one thing and come out with three sheets of foam board that seem like a steal. Then it falls apart the second you try to use it. I see it with their tape that won't stick and pens that dry up in a week. It feels like saving money up front just guarantees you'll have to buy the real thing later anyway.

Yeah I remember reading that EVA foam is way more forgiving for heat forming, and @jadeprice is right that dollar store board cant handle that.
