I finally fixed my cardboard Mandalorian helmet after it caved in at a con in Baltimore
Two hours into Baltimore Comic Con my Mandalorian helmet folded in on itself because I used plain Elmer's glue on corrugated cardboard and it got damp from my own breath. I sat on a curb outside the food court with a tube of hot glue a friend handed me and rebuilt the dome in about 40 minutes using a plastic salad bowl from Subway as a mold, which cost me nothing. It looked lumpy but it held, and three people still asked for photos with it that day. Back when I started building in 2018 nobody shared templates, so I was doing everything blind, and this was another one of those lessons. Now I want to know, does anyone have a trick for sealing cardboard so it survives a sweaty full day at a con?
Mod podge is a trap for a full con day. I tried that route and by hour three the sweat just ate through it and the cardboard went soft anyway. The real fix is plasti dip spray, two or three coats on the inside where your head actually sits, because that is where the damp comes from. Outside coats do nothing if your breath is fogging up the inside of the dome. Heat gun the cardboard first to cook out any moisture, then seal it, and it will outlast the con.
