Hot take: you don't need a 3D printer for armor, I built a full Mandalorian chest plate from a $5 yoga mat and a heat gun.

I kept seeing folks say you need expensive foam or printed parts, but after watching a prop maker on YouTube use a cheap mat for flexible details, I cut, shaped, and sealed one over a weekend and it holds paint better than I thought, so has anyone else tried using totally wrong materials that actually worked?

Old floor mats are a solid idea. The textured side can look like worn metal if you dry brush it right. I used a cut up truck bed liner for some shoulder pads once, and the rubber took spray paint without any special sealant. Stuff like that is usually free if you ask a mechanic.

Saw a tutorial where someone used old floor mats for armor.

Totally makes sense, they're dense and cheap. Could probably cut shapes for pauldrons or a chest piece pretty easy.
