Hit $50 on a single cosplay prop and it changed my whole approach

I used to think you had to spend big to get good cosplay props. Last month I made a Mass Effect omni-tool out of an old tablet, some LED strips from the dollar store, and craft foam. Total cost was $12 but it looked solid at the con. Then I added a clear acrylic sheet for the display part and suddenly it popped way more. That $50 mark ($12 plus $38 for the acrylic) surprised me because I thought it would ruin the budget feel. Now I see you can spend a little more on one key piece and still keep the whole costume under $100. Anyone else have a prop that pushed your budget but was totally worth it?

Yeah the "key piece" thing is real. I spent $60 on a resin cast helmet for my Spartan cosplay and it made the whole $80 outfit look like it cost three times that.
