Had to choose between dollar store foam and craft store foam for a helmet build

I was putting together a cheap Mandalorian helmet for a con next weekend and realized I had two options: the $1.25 foam sheets at Dollar Tree or the $4.99 ones at Michael's. I went with the dollar store stuff because I'm stubborn and wanted to save cash for the paint. After three attempts it kept crumbling on the curves and I had to buy the craft store foam anyway. Now I've got a half-finished helmet and a pile of broken foam pieces scattered across my garage floor. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way or am I the only dummy who tries to cut corners on base materials?

That line "crumbling on the curves" hits way too close to home. Was it more of a mental thing for you, like you knew you should take it easy but your brain just wouldn't cooperate? I always wonder if I'm just not cut out for anything that requires like, actual precision and control, or if it's something everyone deals with eventually.
