Had to choose between a thrift store jacket or cutting up my dad's old leather coat for a cosplay

Honestly, I needed a specific bomber jacket for a character and the thrift store one was $15 but the wrong color, while my dad's old coat was perfect but, you know, sentimental. I picked the thrift store one and spent 3 hours with fabric dye trying to fix it, and now it's a weird splotchy mess. Tbh, should I have just asked to cut up the coat or is there a better way to dye cheap pleather?
