Garage sale foam vs craft store foam, I'm switching sides

Picked up a pile of old exercise mats at a garage sale in Dayton for 12 bucks, figured they'd be perfect for armor pieces since everyone says craft store foam is the only way. After a week of cutting and heat shaping, those mats hold curves way better and didn't crumble at the edges like the 5 dollar sheets I used before. Has anyone else had luck with random secondhand foam, or am I just getting lucky with this batch?
