A random thrift store find changed my whole approach to armor builds

I grabbed a $4 yoga mat at Goodwill in Portland last month and it worked better than EVA foam for my Halo shoulder pieces. The foam was thin enough to heat-form easily but held its shape without backing. Has anyone else tried weird materials from thrift stores for costume parts?

Honestly, calling a yoga mat a "game changer" for armor builds feels like a stretch. Foam is foam, and thrift store finds are hit or miss because you don't know how they'll hold up over time. Ngl, I'd stick with proper EVA foam if you want something that doesn't flake apart after a few wears.

Used a thrift store camping mat for a Mandalorian chest plate last year and it held up through three conventions and a photoshoot in the rain. Always thought you needed the expensive stuff from craft stores but that mat was thicker than EVA and way more flexible for the curved pieces. The material kept its shape even after I heat gunned it a few times. Not sure I'd trust it for a full suit but for individual armor parts it's a solid option.
