A 9-year-old at a con made me rethink my $40 armor approach
Last weekend at a small con in Columbus, this kid in a full cardboard Iron Man suit stopped to look at my foam chest piece. He asked why mine was all smooth and plain, then showed me how he drew panel lines with a sharpie and layered cardboard scales for texture. I've been spending all my effort on sanding and priming to hide every seam, but he was having way more fun adding cheap details that actually sold the look. So now I'm experimenting with craft foam strips and hot glue beads as rivets, total cost like $3 extra. Has anyone else gotten a great tip from a younger builder that you'd never have tried on your own?

Wait, does smooth and clean actually look worse than cardboard sharpie?
