Why is nobody talking about demo account spreads being fake?

I was testing a new platform for 2 weeks and their demo showed spreads around 1.2 pips on EUR/USD. Soon as I funded with $500, the real spreads jumped to 2.8 pips and my first 3 trades got stopped out by slippage. That's a huge difference and it makes the whole review process worthless if you don't check live charts first. Anyone else notice this bait-and-switch, or did I just pick a shady firm in Chicago?
